In the presence of Ana Vaz (Brazil), Dominic Gagnon (Canada), Elizabeth Povinelli (USA), John Paul Sniadecki (USA), Juliane Henrich (Germany), Kidlat Tahimik (Philippines), Leonor Teles (Portugal), Luís Alves de Matos (Portugal), Myriam Lefkowitz (France), Raúl Domingues (Portugal) and films by Ana Hatherly (Portugal), Doc’s Kingdom returns to Arcos de Valdevez in 2016. Programmed by Aily Nash and Nuno Lisboa, the seminar proposes “the end of nature” as a starting point for the program of films, discussions and encounters taking place from Saturday evening, September 3rd, to Thursday morning, September 8th.
Doc’s Kingdom presents one program for all participants to discover along the week, as it is not announced beforehand. The informal atmosphere in between screenings, discussions, meals and walks is complemented by the inspiring place of Arcos de Valdevez.
The global ecology is irreversibly affected by human activity. Departing from the end demands looking to the future from the symptoms of the present. But the end of nature does not necessarily refer here to a projection of the apocalypse or to a diagnosis of the anthropocene. The end of nature can also be read as the dissolution of the myth of nature as discrete from culture - acknowledging that all things are part of a continuous ecological entity. Raising the possibility of an ecology of images in a world saturated with images, Doc's Kingdom 2016 invites us on a journey in all cardinal directions, with a group of featured filmmakers whose cinema proposes new maps for using and reading images today.
